Everyone has hard days. Stress, sadness and worry are part of life. But when those feelings stick around, grow stronger or start getting in the way of work, school or relationships, it may be time to talk to a professional.
Reaching out is not a sign of weakness. It is a step toward feeling like yourself again.
Common signs to watch for
You may benefit from talking to a psychiatric provider if you notice any of these for more than a couple of weeks:
- Feeling overwhelmed and unable to focus. Everyday tasks feel too big, and your mind keeps drifting.
- Procrastinating or struggling to finish even small tasks. Things pile up, and starting feels impossible.
- Feeling hopeless or worthless. You feel down most days, or like nothing you do matters.
- Lacking a sense of identity. You feel disconnected from who you are or what you want.
- Worrying excessively. Your mind races with what-ifs that are hard to switch off.
- Feeling anxious about letting others down. Fear of disappointing people shapes your choices.
Other signs include changes in sleep or appetite, losing interest in things you used to enjoy, mood swings, or using alcohol or other substances to cope.
